چکیده

Ophiostoma novo-ulmi continues to be one of the most dangerous invasive fungi, destroying many autochthonous elm forests and cultures throughout world. Searching for natural genotypes tolerant Dutch disease (DED) is main objectives silviculturists all over northern hemisphere in order save susceptible elms restore their ecosystem biodiversity. In this regard, first trial was established between 1991 1994, south-west Romania (Pădurea Verde, Timișoara), using three species (Ulmus minor, U. glabra, laevis) with 38 provenances. A local strain used artificially inoculate variants DED evolution observed. Furthermore, 2018–2021 inventoried understand genotype reaction environmental conditions after almost 30 years. The outcomes present study proved continuous presence infections comparative culture its proximity, but identified pathogen had a new hybrid form (found time Romania) O. ssp. americana x novo-ulmi. Wych (U. glabra) extremely sensitive DED: only 12 trees (out 69 found 2018) survived 2021, tree could selected according adopted health criteria (resistance vigour). field minor) pathogen, there were still individuals that showed good status growth. contrast, European white constant tolerance 15% been dead or presented severe symptoms dieback. Overall, results report diverse reactions Romanian regional last decades, providing promising perspectives improving forest ecosystems Carpathian basin.

Resistance to Dutch Elm Disease Reduces Presence of Xylem Endophytic Fungi in Elms (Ulmus spp.)

Efforts to introduce pathogen resistance into landscape tree species by breeding may have unintended consequences for fungal diversity. To address this issue, we compared the frequency and diversity of endophytic fungi and defensive phenolic metabolites in elm (Ulmus spp.) trees with genotypes known to differ in resistance to Dutch elm disease. Our results indicate that resistant U. minor and U...

Simultaneous induction of jasmonic acid and disease-responsive genes signifies tolerance of American elm to Dutch elm disease.

Dutch elm disease (DED), caused by three fungal species in the genus Ophiostoma, is the most devastating disease of both native European and North American elm trees. Although many tolerant cultivars have been identified and released, the tolerance mechanisms are not well understood and true resistance has not yet been achieved. Here we show that the expression of disease-responsive genes in re...

Selecting and Testing Elms: the Wisconsin Elm Breeding Program

Selecting and testing elms for urban areas has required a substantial commitment of land, greenhouse space, equipment and labor over thirty years time. The development and continued survival of this program has depended primarily upon satisfying and education/basic research function; the production of improved cultivars has been an important but secondary product. Although resistance to Dutch e...
